Mechanical Designer

We are recruiting for the position of mechanical designer.

Role

  

The role of mechanical designer is to be responsible for designing custom machinery and automated equipment in various industries from concept to final product.  The incumbent will conduct all activities in a manner that is conducive to positive morale, individual style, quality, creativity and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

  

The responsibilities include:

  • Analyze engineering specifications and customer requirements
  • Design mechanisms, subsystems and complete machines involving mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical and electronic components using Solidworks
  • Select appropriate purchased components
  • Perform engineering calculations (to determine: materials, speeds, torques, forces, etc.)
  • Produce drawings and bills of materials using CAD and ERP tools
  • Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, machining techniques, finishes, etc.
  • Analyze designs and systems for compliance to applicable standards
  • Develop a test plan to verify that the equipment meets all relevant specifications including safety standards
  • Communicate with customers for technical information and specifications
  • Communicate with vendors for technical information and specifications
  • Communicate with technical managers and project team members regarding all aspects of the project
  • Assist the builders of the equipment in the resolution of problems to complete the project
  • Assist the field service technicians to troubleshoot problems as required
  • Prepare documentation including operator manuals, set-up manuals and service manuals

  

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements

  • Ability to use Solid Works (mechanical CAD) effectively in the design work
  • Applicable safety and ergonomics standards
  • Knowledge of existing and emerging technologies in machine design
  • Familiar with product design
  • A post secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering or equivalent and a minimum of 3 years experience in a similar position.

Controller

We are recruiting for the position of Controller.

Summary

Sterner Automation’s Controller will provide leadership and coordination of company financial planning, debt financing, and budget management functions. The Controller will work to ensure that the company’s accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles. The successful candidate will apply relevant experience in the build to order or engineer to order manufacturing environment to this position.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Oversee daily operations of the accounting department.
  2. Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget.
  3. Direct and coordinate company financial planning and budget management functions for both departments and projects.
  4. Recommend benchmarks for measuring the financial and operating performance of divisions and departments.
  5. Direct and coordinate debt financing and debt service payments with external agencies.
  6. Manage the preparation of the annual financial statements.
  7. Manage the preparation of and financial forecasts.
  8. Prepare financial analysis for contract negotiations and product investment decisions.
  9. Ensure compliance with local, provincial and federal regulatory requirements.
  10. Work with department managers and corporate staff to develop business plans for the Company.
  11. Establish and implement short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
  12. Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the department's goals and objectives.
  13. Serve on planning and policy-making committees.

Direct financial audits and provide recommendations for procedural improvements.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements

  1. The successful candidate must have experience in a build to order or engineer to order environment.
  2. Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems. Knowledge of federal and provincial financial regulations. Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections. Working knowledge of short and long term budgeting and forecasting, rolling budgets, and product-line and project profitability analysis.
  3. Work requires professional written, oral communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects. Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings.
  4. CMA designation or equivalent experience.
  5. Experience with Navision ERP or the similar software will be an asset.

A minimum of 3 years experience in a similar position.

Inventory Control Clerk

Sterner Automation is located in Toronto’s west end, walking distance from Kipling and Islington subway stops and GO transit and Mississauga transit hubs.  Our manufacturing and inventory facilities are located with our engineering offices and are fully air-conditioned. 

We are recruiting for the position of Inventory Control Clerk.

Role

The person in this position is responsible for the control and distribution of the company’s inventory.  Daily tasks include the accurate receiving and recording of goods into inventory, dealing with suppliers regarding non-compliance or discrepancies with the order, tracking inventory usage, and organizing job carts during the build phase of projects.  Additionally this person will set minimum inventory levels, reorder points and manage and designate kanban items.   This position also manages finished goods inventory and tool tracking.  This role is a critical one in ensuring that inventory items are accounted for and valued correctly.

The position reports the Manager of Finance and Administration but will work closely with engineering and manufacturing on a daily basis.

Primary Responsibilities

 

  • Receive items ensuring compliance with the purchase order.  Communicate directly with vendors when issues arise to resolve problems
  • Set up and manage the job carts for manufacturing so that production can locate parts in an efficient manner
  • Manage the transfer of all items into and out of inventory to ensure accurate job costing 
  • Manage the kanban items including designating parts as kanban items and determining proper inventory levels
  • Accounting and physical storage of finished goods into inventory, including proper costing
  •  Ensure that inventory items are counted and valued accurately

 

Knowledge & Skills Required

 

  • Relevant college diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of inventory control systems
  • Must be a highly organized person with an unparalleled attention to detail
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to contend with changing priorities in a fast paced environment
  • Must have a solid basic knowledge of commonly used computer programs especially Microsoft Windows based programs (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment
  • Self Motivated
  • Experience or knowledge of mechanical and electrical parts would be an asset
